In 2007, the Museum of Arts and Design launched an exhibition series that examines the renaissance in the use of traditional handcraft materials and techniques in contemporary art and design. The Materials and Process series began with Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting, which featured innovative and provocative work by 27 artists from 7 countries. This exhibition was followed by Pricked: Extreme Embroidery, an ambitious gathering of new work by 48 artists from 17 countries. Both exhibitions included site-specific installations and video works that offered museum visitors unexpected approaches and purposes for these traditional craft processes. These exhibitions proved to be among our most highly visited in the more than 50 year history of MAD, and we extensively promoted in the international press, radio and television, and on an astonishing number of websites. Both exhibitions were accompanied by fully illustrated catalogues, and by extensive educational programming for audiences of all ages.
